Ella Zirina
Ella Zirina (1997) is a jazz guitarist and composer from Latvia, with a passion for the different textures and timbres of her instrument. Her compositions are build out of melodic improvisations, resulting in a personal and emotional sonic environment.
After studying piano until the age of 17, Ella switched to guitar studies, channeling her broad musical influences. Bill Evans, Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery are her 1st Jazz influences. Determined and passionate, she left Latvia and pursued a bachelor degree in Jazz in Amsterdam.
In 2021, Ella graduated with the highest honors at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, having studied with Jesse van Ruller, Reinier Baas, Maarten van der Grinten and Martijn van Iterson among others. For the past months she has been working together with BIMHUIS for ‘New Makers’ project. Within this project she is also recording her debut album with her trio which features a string quartet and Tineke Postma on few tunes.
She is the bandleader of the Ella Zirina Trio with whom she won the first prize in 7 Virtual Jazz Club Competition 2021. She has played in larger ensembles like Jong Metropole and NJJO as well as performed along with the top musicians of the Netherlands as Ben van Gelder, Reinier Baas, Tineke Postma, Jesse van Ruller, Frans van der Hoeven, Mark Alban Lotz as well as with musicians like Pablo Held, Seamus Blake, Miguel Zenon and shared stage during masterclasses with John Scofield and Peter Bernstein.
